Decorate your living space with a friendly summer garden gnome. A new design from Debi Schmitz, this wall hanging pattern features an adorable gnome with a layered beard, playful hat, and beautiful, beaded flower. A fat quarter friendly project, this quilted wall hanging pattern is a charming way to greet guests and can easily be displayed with a dowel rod, pins, or double-stick tape.

Designer Notes: Gnomes aren’t just for winter holidays. Gnomes come out to play and pick flowers in the summer, too! This little guy is picking a flower for his home. This is a fun banner to complete; several pieces are ironed onto the quilt and blanket-stitched around the entire motif.

The beard is three layers of needled cotton batting: a fun textural beard to add dimension. This small quilt hangs on the wall between two small pins or nails. It can also be hung with home décor double stick tape that is often used for frames. (It can be easily removed without damaging the wall.)

Sewing Instructions:

Place (1) Pattern A, (1) Pattern C, and (1) Pattern F in the center of (1) salmon rectangle and press in place as shown in Photo 1.
Place (2) Pattern D for arms on the body making sure to place right and left correctly. Place (2) Pattern B mittens at the end of the arms, again respecting right and left. Press in place.
Place (1) Pattern M, large beard in place on the body. Place (1) Pattern K, nose, on top of the beard as shown. Press in place.
Place (1) Pattern G, large flower, (1) Pattern H, medium flower, (1) small flower in place with (1) Pattern L, leaf, and (3) petals on the salmon fabric. Press in place.
Blanket-stitch around all pieces with respective thread colors. Stitch around each level of flower.
Blanket-stitch (1) Pattern N, medium beard and (1) Pattern O, small beard to the large beard.
Stitch long lines on the leaf for veining and long stitches on the flowers for dimension. Stitch the teal beads in the center of the flower.
Make a quilt sandwich as follows: remaining salmon rectangle right side to the work surface, batting rectangle, and then the finished gnome right side up on top. Stitch around the entire piece close to the edge of the fabrics to secure.
Make bias tape of the (3) 2” x 20” strips sewn together. Machine-stitch the bias to the front of the wall quilt and then hand-stitch the bias on the back.

OPTIONAL WAYS TO HANG:

Make a rod channel of 1 1/2” x 11” salmon fabric. Sew it centered on the top back of the quilt back before sewing the quilt together. The bottom edge should be stitched to the salmon fabric as shown in Diagram 1: 1 1/4” from the top. Fold the bottom edge of the fabric channel up to the top edge of the panel. Trim as needed and stitch in place during Step #8.
Use home décor double stick tape that can be later removed without damaging the wall.
