Make something old new again. Our new collection has high style for a low price!
Dear Sewing Superstar,
Upcycling is all the rage these days; why buy new when you can repurpose something you already have — or that you can get inexpensively or even free? Thrift shops are full of possibilities. Of course, you may not have to look any farther than your fabric stash — or the back of your closet — for inspiration.
These projects are perfect for seasoned sewists and beginners alike. Get ready for some creative upcycling!
Coat styles come and go, but leather is virtually forever. You can take a thrift store coat — or a “vintage” coat you’ve had stashed in the back of your closet — and transform it into new stylish purse. This project achieves two goals: it keeps an old coat out of the waste stream, and it gives you a fashionable new purse without the high fashion price tag!
The tutorial for our New Beginnings Refashioned Leather Bag walks you through each step of the process, from choosing the ideal coat to use as the fabric for your purse to the little details on making this a well-constructed purse that will dress up almost any outfit — all without having to spend big bucks on high fashion!
And, when it’s time to winnow the t-shirt collection, take your tee game up a notch with a little style (and not a lot of work!). Make our Pastel Perfection Upcycled Tank Top and breathe new life — and style — into a tired old tee. Transform your old t-shirt into a dreamy tank top. Get a jump on your summer wardrobe with something “new” — upcycling for the win!
What about that plain shirt that you’ve had on standby forever — you know, that extra one you bought to layer with other shirts? Why not dress it up with some easy, eye-catching applique? Our tutorial for the Take Flight Upcycled Applique Top gives you step-by-step instructions for a boring-to-beautiful transformation!
You don’t have to be an expert at sewing to make any of these projects in Upcycling & Refashioning: Ideas for Thrifty Sewists Collection from We Like Sewing. Every pattern in this issue includes a detailed template, pattern notes, and a complete list of the tools and materials you need to succeed. Ready to create something beautiful? Let’s go!

I live and love to recycle! I grew up with the old saw
Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. I had three older sisters so I didn’t get many new clothes. Mine were mostly hand-me-downs or came from the resale shops. My mom had 10 kids to raise and not much money. She made it stretch.
Love that saying, Peggy! Recycling and upcycling are so important 🙂 – Ashley, WeLikeSewing
Love the recycle! They look fun to do. Laura
