Dear Sewing-Lover,
Is it possible to have too many pin cushions? I doubt it! From the classic tomato pin cushion to pin cushions shaped like teacups, hedge hogs, cacti, flowers, fruit, and more, each one is cuter than the last. Pin cushions are so useful, too! You need at least one at each of your sewing stations, plus pin cushions to hold hand-stitching needles and safety pins as well as straight pins, and don’t forget one for your sewing basket. Of course, some people seek out pin cushions simply to collect them—a reminder of the fun and creativity sewing brings.
You could hardly express the love of sewing better than with a pretty and practical heart-shaped pin cushion. And we can recommend the perfect pin cushion pattern—the Stamped Faux Quilted Heart Pin Cushion. This pin cushion pattern has it all: a stamped “patchwork” motif, machine stitching, decorative hand stitching, and easy-to-follow instructions! You’ll want to make a bunch of these heart pin cushions and give to everyone you know with a passion for sewing.
This pin cushion pattern is especially fun to make because you can “design” your own fabric using Ann Butler’s square and triangle stamps on muslin. Just change the arrangement of the stamped blocks—or the ink color—to make the design your own. And, like all of our pin cushion patterns to sew, this one comes with tips and tricks to make sure your Stamped Faux Quilted Heart Pin Cushion comes out just the way you want. Best of all, you can download this Stamped Faux Quilted Heart Pin Cushion pattern for FREE.
Sewists love pin cushion patterns, and this Stamped Faux Quilted Heart Pin Cushion pattern is so easy
The Stamped Faux Quilted Heart Pin Cushion pattern in this free download is easy to follow and uses basic sewing techniques, so it’s fun and quick to make. You simply stamp the muslin fabric with the square and triangle stamps to create a “patchwork” pattern, add batting and muslin backing, and stitch along the lines of the stamped pattern to quilt. Cut out two hearts, one from the quilted fabric and one from the plain muslin and embroider over the machine stitching to give the pin cushion top a hand-quilted appearance. Stitch the two hearts right sides together, turn, stuff, and finish!
For this free download, you’ll need ¼-yard muslin, stamps and pigment ink, batting and backing fabric, embroidery floss, Poly-fil®, Glasslets, and basic sewing tools and notions.
We give you everything else—the downloadable pattern with full directions, step-by-step photos, and a template for the heart shape—to make it easy for you to create this sweet pin cushion with our free download, the Stamped Faux Quilted Heart Pin Cushion Pattern.

About the Free Stamped Faux Quilted Heart Pin Cushion Pattern
This pin cushion sewing pattern features a hand-stamped design that you can customize to make your own. You could also repurpose a scrap of quilted material or a piece of a vintage cutter quilt to make the top. We used a running stitch to accent the machine-stitched lines and replicate the look of hand quilting. But you could embroider anyway you like, for example with a chain stitch, feather stitch, or split stitch. The back of the pin cushion is cut from muslin, but here again you can personalize with contrasting wool felt, fleece, or commercial fabric. The pin cushion is stuffed with Poly-fil® and weighted down with a few Glasslets (small glass beads) to help keep it in place on your sewing surface.
The Stamped Faux Quilted Heart Pin Cushion makes a wonderful gift for your favorite quilter or sewist. This pin cushion pattern is so easy you’ll want to create one for all your friends. It’s also the perfect project for someone who is learning to sew. Imagine how happy they will be to make their own pin cushion and display it proudly. The heart shape will remind them of their love for sewing—and you!
