Thrift it, scrap it, upcycle it in our April Issue!

Super sustainable sewing strategies!

Dear Sewing Superstar,

Earth Day is in April. But, really, isn’t every day Earth Day? We try to keep sustainability and upcycling in mind when we pick our projects, and we have six super sewing projects for you that will help you reduce, reuse, recycle, and relax! Here’s a peek inside the April Issue of We Like Sewing!

Make Your Mark

T-shirts don’t get the credit they deserve. They’re comfy, soft, and oh-so versatile. You can dress a T-shirt up or down, or use it as your own personal creative canvas. In our feature article, Make Your Mark: How to Hand Embroider T-Shirts, learn how to customize a T-shirt in a few simple steps. Try this once and you’re bound to get more ideas to spruce up your plain T-shirts with just a little effort!

Thrifty Sewing Projects That We Love

Quilted clothing and quilted accents are totally on trend these days, and our Cottage Chic Denim Jacket Refashion walks you through the creative process. Combine a denim jacket with a colorful quilted panel from a careworn quilt, a favorite block you’ve made yourself, or maybe a new custom panel just for this project. Refashioning is a great way to brighten up a thrifted or well-loved jacket with a fresh new look. Bonus: this project is beginner-friendly, complete with step-by-step instructions with photos!

We know it would be more environmentally responsible to ditch those single-use paper towels on the counter. But what to use instead? Make our Paisley Upcycled Paperless Towels from thrifted fabric (or your fabric stash) and create your own eco-friendly custom towel roll. We’ll walk you through everything from fabric sourcing to storage to cleaning. Make a plan that works for you and you won’t miss those paper towels. You can even reuse your paper towel holder to hold your new towels!

Dreaming in Denim

Denim’s too sturdy and useful to throw away. And as more and more communities work to eliminate fabric from the waste stream, we need to get creative. Our Odds-and-Ends Organizational Denim Basket is the perfect new use for old jeans. Finish this easy sewing project in an afternoon and have a new place to store sewing notions, books—or maybe some upcycled paperless towels!

Torn old jeans can have new life when you make our Recycled Denim Oven Mitt. Use a mix of denim scraps or other sturdy cotton scraps to piece together a one-of-a-kind oven mitt—as a gift or maybe as a treat for yourself. Keep this pattern in your back pocket for a great way to put denim scraps to great use!

Colorful Quilting Faves

Warmer weather puts us in a picnic frame of mind. Gather up some of your bigger fabric scraps and make our Ants Go Marching Scrappy Picnic Blanket so you’re ready for your next picnic outing. You’ll love the playful and practical details—from the big blocky ant to the zippered pouch to store picnic essentials! Perfect for beginning quilters, this project provides plenty of opportunities to try out different sewing techniques.

The traditional pineapple quilt block is a popular pattern, and we’ve added an extra eco-dimension to it. Gather up your fabric scraps and start planning the Sliced Pineapple Star FPP Quilt Block. You’ll need a basic understanding of foundation paper piecing to make this bold block that works well as a throw pillow or mini quilt. This is a fun way to use some of your fabric stash to create a beautiful bold block!

The patterns in our April Issue of We Like Sewing range from Easy to Experienced. That means skill and confidence building for beginning sewists, and interesting challenges for the more experienced among us. All these projects are designed to brighten your day and add more happiness to your home!

No expert sewing skills are required to make any of the projects in our April Issue. Each pattern in this issue includes a detailed template, pattern notes, and a complete list of the tools and materials you need to succeed. Get into the upcycling spirit and let’s get sewing!
