Add a hint of gothic romance to your wardrobe with an enchanting refashioning project from Sadie Metter. Using a thrifted denim jacket and black lace dress, you’ll learn how to replace your jacket’s back panel with delicate material to give your outerwear a wickedly charming sheer look. Materials:
- One store-bought denim jacket (Sadie’s was found at the thrift store.)
- Black lace fabric or lace garment that you can cut up. (The designer’s is from a thrifted black lace dress.)
- Black thread
Instructions:
- Working on the back of the denim jacket, mark a line with a ruler and chalk that is 1” from the seams on the center back panel.
- Cut out this rectangle. This will become the pattern you use for the lace.
- Clip into each of the four corners.
- Using a serger or a zig-zag stitch on your sewing machine, finish all four of the raw edges that you just cut out.
- Take the piece of denim that you just cut away from the back of the jacket and use this as a pattern on your lace fabric.
- Add 1” around the denim and cut out from the lace fabric.
- Carefully pin the lace to the jacket, right side of lace facing wrong side of jacket. The lace becomes the new back panel of the jacket.
- Baste in place and remove pins as you sew.
- From the right side of the jacket, zig-zag the edge of the denim, being sure to catch the lace underneath.
- Trim away any excess lace.
- Repeat all steps with the back yoke piece.
- Get creative! You can even use this method to replace other sections of the jacket.
