Instructions:
- Cut fabrics using the included template, for a set of 6 coasters:
- Diamonds from Template A – 6 from each color – 18 pieces total
- Hexagons from Template B – 2 from each color – 6 pieces total
- 6 – 6” squares of batting
- Press all fabric pieces before starting to make sure all of your edges are flat.
- Start with two of your diamonds and sew them together along one long edge with a 1/4” seam allowance. Leave the last 1/4” unstitched at the point that will be the center of the coaster.
- Take your third diamond and place one of the edges along one edge of the diamonds from Step 3. Starting 1/4” from the points that will be the center of the diamond, sew with 1/4” seam allowance to the outer edge.
- Match the final unsewn edge of your diamonds, starting 1/4” from the points that will be the center of the diamond, sew with 1/4” seam allowance to the opposite outer edge.
- Turn right side up and press. Make sure there are no holes or folds of fabric. This is a Y-Seam, which can be a little tricky to get just right. You may want to experiment with one set of diamonds until you are happy with your results before moving on to the rest of your pieces.
- Make sure all of your pieced hexagons and backing hexagons are pressed flat. Lay one pieced hexagon on your work surface, right side up. Lay one of your backing hexagons on top right side down. Match all edges. Lay a square of batting on top, making sure the coaster is centered inside the square. Pin all layers together.
- Sew around the outside edge of the hexagon with a 1/4” seam allowance, leaving a hole for turning along one side.
- Trim the batting to match the edges of your hexagon. Trim each corner of the hexagon and turn the coaster right side out and push out all corners. Press well, tucking in the edges of the opening used for turning.
- Edge stitch around the entire outside edge; this will close up the hole used for turning.
- Quilt lines along two of the diamonds, about 1/4” apart. Feel free to get creative and come up with your own quilted design for your coasters.
- Repeat Steps 7-11 for all remaining coasters.
