The closure of Joann’s still has the sewing and quilting world reeling, especially for those in rural areas where access to brick-and-mortar fabric stores is limited. After the news about Joann’s broke, we had readers reach out requesting an article about where to shop for fabric online, and we’re happy to oblige. While we outlined ways to support your local fabric store in our April 2025 issue, this month we’re focusing on some of the best places to shop for fabric online.

In this article, we’re avoiding big box stores like Walmart and major online retailers like Amazon and are shifting focus to independent suppliers and favorite shops among sewists and quilters alike. If you’re finding yourself in the middle of a fabric desert, let us help you source the best fabric for your next sewing project. Before we dive in, please note that we’ll be focusing on US-based sellers as we’re located in the US. If you want to keep this article handy, be sure to save it to your Favorites!

Mood Fabrics

Made famous by Project Runway, Mood Fabrics is a major online retailer and has two physical stores (one in New York and one in Los Angeles). You can find not only fabric on Mood’s website but buttons, trims, and sewing notions. Mood sells both fashion and home fabrics and features a section for remnants online, where you can purchase discounted fabric up to 50% off. In general, due to the quality of their fabrics, prices at Mood are going to be higher than other online retailers, so it’s very important to consider this when purchasing and planning out projects.

Etsy

While we’re not focusing on any specific Etsy retailer (there are so many to choose from), if you’re on the hunt for unique prints, vintage fabric, and quirky notions, we would recommend seeing what sellers on Etsy have to offer. As when ordering from any Etsy shop, it’s vital to check out reviews from other customers before purchasing, so that you can get a feel for the quality of the materials. Often, small brick-and-mortar fabric stores have their own Etsy shop, so if there’s a local shop that you’ve been wanting to check out, see if they have their own Etsy storefront.

Fabric Mart

Another popular online shop for sewists, Fabric Mart offers a wide selection of knit and woven fabrics, as well as a large range of supplies and notions. Fabric Mart also has a retail outlet located in Sinking Springs, Pennsylvania and posts virtual online classes as well. While you will find a higher price point than some other retailers, Fabric Mart also offers several clearance and budget-friendly options online, including a discounted $2/yard section.

Vogue Fabrics

Located just outside of Chicago, Vogue Fabrics in Evanston, IL has a retail location as well as a large online selection for sewists. In addition to their wide variety of fabrics, their website also offers specialty sewing supplies for corset making, Swarovski rhinestones and applicator tools, and quilting basics like Kona solids. Their website also offers a small directory for sewing classes in the Chicagoland area, as well as fabric and pattern options for cosplayers and historical reenactors.

Fat Quarter Shop

A favorite among quilters, Fat Quarter Shop’s online store carries a gorgeous variety of precuts, as well fun quilt kits and different subscriptions for monthly clubs and BOMs. You’ll find a variety of quilting tools and notions on their site, and their Home & Gifts section has a delightful selection of gift ideas for your quilting pals. You’ll also find playful needle minders and quirky cross stitch patterns and kits, making it a must-shop for cross stitchers.

Fort Worth Fabric Studio

Quilters should also check out Fort Worth Fabric Studio’s site for fun prints and precuts. An online-only store located out of Fort Worth, Texas, this retailer’s Brands section makes it easy to shop by your favorite fabric brands like Robert Kauffman and Free Spirit. We also recommend checking out their Digital Patterns section, where you can find a beautiful array of digital patterns (some of them for free).

Missouri Star Quilt Co.

A fabric haven for quilters, Missouri Star offers a wide selection of precuts, batiks, fabric panels, and minky fabric. While their apparel fabric selection is somewhat limited (their focus is, after all, on quilting fabric), they also carry a large variety of tools and notions for both sewing and quilting. Check out their Daily Deals section of their site for unique sales, as well as their excellent YouTube channel for quilting walkthroughs and tutorials.

We hope that you’ve enjoyed our brief journey into the world of online fabric shopping. Our community has felt the void left by the closure of Joann’s, and this list is a great starting point for your fabric shopping endeavors. We would love for you to share your favorite online fabric shops in the comments below!
