Each March, thousands of kids around the world pick up a needle and thread for the Global Kids Sewing Party, a hands-on initiative founded by Trixi Symonds that celebrates creativity and giving through simple softie-making.
Each March, the Global Kids Sewing Party brings children together to sew a simple softie and give it to someone in their community. In 2025, close to 6,000 kids across 26 countries took part, sewing everything from love bugs to emoji softies and discovering how achievable hand sewing can be.
The 2026 event marks 10 years of Sew a Softie, a movement built on the idea that sewing with kids should be simple, creative and accessible for anyone. Over the years, the Global Kids Sewing Party has become a favorite project for schools, community groups and families looking for a hands-on activity that encourages both making and giving.
Participants interpret the idea in their own way. Mullaloo Primary in Australia stitched love bugs for a Harmony Day hunt. In Spain, older students turned drawings from younger children into softies, keeping the original shapes and colors. Glenwood Elementary in the United States created softies from student sketches across several grades. Grandparents and grandkids joined in, too, sewing zenkis and other softies together at home.
Each year, the event also includes prize giveaways from supporters in the sewing community, adding a little extra excitement for groups taking part.
Registration for the 2026 Global Kids Sewing Party is open now. Anyone can join—schools, libraries, community groups or families at home. You simply register, sew a softie in March and gift it to someone in your community.
