Midwest Table Runner and Napkins

Make your dining room table look magazine-ready with this easy table linens tutorial! Update your table setting for the upcoming holiday season by designing a simple and sophisticated table runner and matching cloth napkins. This beginner-friendly sewing project allows you to play with prints and colors while following only a few instructions, so it’s an excellent project for new sewists. Create a festive tablescape using holiday colors or make your décor sleek and chic by combining classic prints to embrace the modern farmhouse trend.

Finished Size: Napkins are 18” square; runner is 12” x 48”

Materials:

  • 1  1/2 yard 44/45” fabric for Main Color (MC).  (I prefer a batik print so the color looks vibrant on both sides)
  • 1/2 yard coordinating fabric for Contrast Color (runner only)
  • 1/2 yard 60” wide light cotton solid for Lining (runner only)
  • Coordinating sewing thread

Cutting Instructions:

  1. Cut four 20” squares out of MC for napkins.
  2. Out of MC (main color), cut two 13” squares.
  3. Out of CC (contrasting color), cut one 13” square and two rectangles each 13” tall x 7” wide.
  4. Cut Lining 13” tall x 49” wide.

Sewing Instructions:

NAPKINS:

  1. On each side of napkin, fold under raw edge a scant 1/2” toward wrong side, then fold another 1/2”.
  2. Press and topstitch into place.

RUNNER:

  1. With RS (right sides) together, sew pieces together along 13” edges in order shown in photo – narrow CC rectangle, then MC square, then CC square, then MC square, then narrow CC rectangle.
  2. With RS together, pin lining into place on assembled runner.
  3. Stitch around all four sides, leaving an opening of about 4” – 6” for turning.
  4. Clips corners and trim seam allowances.
  5. Turn right side out and press.
  6. Press seam allowances of opening towards the inside of the runner and pin.
  7. Topstitch around all four sides, closing up the opening as you stitch over it.

Hi! I am new to sewing and this project looks pretty. I’m thinking Spring/Summer colors. What type of fabric would I use for the table runner lining? “1/2 yard 60” wide light cotton solid for Lining (runner only)”
