Summer 2025 Fashion Trends
- Lovely in Lace – Lace has been predicted as a trending fabric for 2025 and what better time to wear this stylish and sweet material than this summer. We love the versatility of lace and have seen this fabric featured on flirty summer halters and tube tops, demure sundresses, and as trim on early 2000s-inspired camisoles. The Avery Butterfly Sleeve Dress Pattern from Aishat Sulaiman featured in this issue is a dreamy dress for weddings and graduations, and its godet skirt features stunning lace details. New to sewing lace? Don’t miss tips and tricks from Rebecca George, which can also be found in this issue.
- ‘90s Throwback – We’ve seen a LOT of silhouettes and color palettes from the late 1980s and early 1990s trending this year, but by far the most popular throwback item on runways was the windbreaker. Perfect for those dewy, breezy summer mornings, the modern windbreaker opts for simple color palettes and streamlined patterns as opposed to the busy designs of yesteryear. A great, practical option for unpredictable weather, a windbreaker is the jacket to make this summer.
- Your Go-To Summer Accessory – Skinny scarves and lightweight, sheer scarves are both trending for this year, so if you’ve been wanting to sew a quick, fashion-forward accessory that will instantly upgrade your favorite outfit, these scarves are perfect. Skinny scarves give outfits a 70s rock vibe, making them a fun option for bright colors and bold patterns. Their sheer alternative is a beautiful and dainty accessory to pair with your favorite sundress. Traci Anderson’s shawl scarf pattern from December 2024 works for light-weight delicate fabrics as well as luxe velvets and can be worn around the neck or in your hair.
- Pastel Dream – Pastels are the trending colors for 2025 (specifically butter yellow) and their soft, romantic hues are a dreamy match for hazy summer days. We love the idea of pairing this color palette with one of the other trends found in this list, such as detailed lace for your next special occasion. If you love wearing pastels, don’t miss Mary Beth Temple’s Tuscany V-Neck Blouse Pattern (August 2023), which combines another popular trend, floaty, boho clothing, with an airy sky blue.
- On the Fringe – Love adding playful details to your garments and accessories? The time has come to embrace all things fringe! Fringe has been trending for Spring and Summer 2025 and is a fun finishing touch to add to a new purse or skirt. We’ve seen more delicate fringe on garments (such as on drop waist dresses) and thicker, leather fringe on summer bags. If you want to add movement to a simple leather or faux leather tote bag, you might enjoy Debi Schmitz’s Vibrant Vinyl Tote Bag (March 2025), which is made in a soft sage and cream combo.
- Plaid for Summer – A pattern most often associated with fall and winter, plaid is seeing a rise in popularity this summer. Wider print plaids, specifically buffalo check plaid, have shown up in summer collections for stores like Target, along with its classic summer cousin, gingham. Summer plaid would look so pretty on a sundress or wide-leg pair of pants, especially in bright primary colors like tomato red and royal blue. Kimberly Payne’s simple midi skirt made in summer colors would look beautiful when paired with a plain t-shirt and sandals (October 2022). And speaking of skirts…
- Pretty Pleats – Pleated skirts have been spotted on Spring and Summer 2025 runways, with pleats ranging from narrow accordion pleats to wider box pleats for a preppy look. This detailing works on all lengths of skirts, with narrower pleats on longer, knee-length skirts and wider pleats showing up on summer miniskirts. If you love this look, sew yourself an East Coast prep inspired tennis skirt with this pattern from Mary Beth Temple, originally featured in our May 2023 issue.
- All Things Accessories – Bag, shoe, and water bottle charms have been trending since late last year, but this year, it’s all about showstopping accessories where more is more. We adore this trend as it lets you update the accessories and bags that you already have without spending a fortune. Add sequins to scrunchies and hair bows, break out your Bedazzler to give a plain baseball cap some sparkle, or add colorful embroidery to a dollar store canvas tote.
